Of course the purpose of Book Club is to read and collectively discuss different perspectives found in literature. Sometimes, you want to mix things up a bit so here are 5 crafty ideas for your next Book Club:

  1. Make bookmarks. Use paper, faux leather, fabric, old book pages or acrylic to create the bookmark. Embellish with tassels, ribbon, stickers, dried flowers, iron-on vinyl, adhesive vinyl, paint, glitter, die cuts or anything else you can put your hands on to dress up your bookmark. We love the 73 homemade DIY bookmark ideas offered by Homesthetics.

  2. Wrap your books for decor. Have your members bring 3 - 4 books (hardcover books are easier to work with but any will do). You can purchase linen fabric in advance (white, natural, olive or black are most popular) or use paper (craft, scrapbook, wrapping, or shopping bags) which will be used to cover your books. Cover your books - have a hot glue gun handy to help keep things in place if needed. Optionally, wrap the set in jute twine or rope or add letter stickers or vinyl. Display your set either horizontally or vertically on your bookshelf!

  3. Make wine glasses. What book club is complete without wine? Use stemmed or stemless glasses and invite everyone to decorate their own glass with etching cream, vinyl, or paint pens.

  4. Make a hostess box. Assign everyone a task to make a customized Host Box for your book club. For example, one person brings the box, a couple people decorate the box, a couple people make a checklist of ideas to print and include in the box (i.e. Discussion Question Ideas, Preparing for Book Club Checklist (from when/how to send out invites to how many snacks to buy), Activity Ideas, Theme Ideas, Book Club Rules (serious or cheeky), etc.), one person brings a set of wineglass charms while another brings glass stickers for disposable cups, etc.

  5. Repurpose an old book. Use the pages to make a wreath; cut a 4x6 shape out of the cover to make a unique photo frame; using the same method as the photo frame, cutout a portion of the cover and use faux plants to make it a planter; make a small clutch purse with an old hardback book (we like this tutorial from A Beautiful Mess).

Since people join book clubs for the social aspect just as much as for the opportunity to read books they may not have selected themselves, you don't always have to select a collective book to read every month. Enjoy a conversation about what everyone is currently reading, or have a non-guided discussion of a selected book over a craft!
